Vintage clothing is often a generic term for new or used garments originating from a previous era. The phrase is as well used in connection with a store, e.g. “vintage clothing store.” It’s also used as an adjective: “This dress is vintage.”
The expression vintage is copied from its use within wine terminology, as a more elegant-seeming euphemism for “old” clothes.
Definition
Most of the time, clothing which had been produced before the 1920s is known as antique clothing and clothing from the 1920s to 1980s is known as vintage. Retro, short for retrospective, usually refers to clothing that imitates the style of a previous era. Clothing produced lately is often called modern or contemporary fashion. Opinions vary on these definitions.
Most vintage clothing will be previously worn, but a small percentage of pieces have not. These include often old warehouse stock, these are typically far more valuable compared to those that had been worn, in particular when they’ve their original tags.
